NEW South Wales man Adam Everill has a background in playing and coaching rugby league, and he will be using it to try and to reduce domestic violence in Papua New Guinea.
Everill from Woollongong, Australia, said about 50% of women in Papua New Guinea would experience some sort of sexual abuse in their lives.
This startling statistic has motivated the musician, concert promoter and former rugby league coach to visit the country to take what he hopes will be an effective method of reducing violence against women.
Papua New Guinea loves rugby league, and the male-dominated sport is where he will focus his attention, providing financial and material contributions to clubs on the provision they sign a code of conduct.
“We have borrowed a successful programme run here in New South Wales and in Queensland and modified them slightly – (as well as signing the code) they have to go to workshops and be part of a local awareness campaign,” he told ABC news.
“We want to use players in the materials we use in the workshops and school work, and we want to do a national awareness campaign too.
“The two main newspapers there are quite sympathetic to the anti-violence cause.”
Everill will spend three weeks in Papua New Guinea from yesterday.
