THE Japanese Government will be assisting the Climate Change and Development Authority in developing the country’s sustainable greenhouse gas inventor system.
Project documents were signed by officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) and the Department of National Planning and Monitoring in Port Moresby on Thursday.
Authority acting managing director Ruel Yamuna said PNG became a party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol in 1992.
“Under these conventions, PNG is obliged to voluntarily report back its vulnerability status and adaption initiatives due to climate change impacts and how it will or has reduced the sources of its greenhouse gases,” he said.
Yamuna said through the project, Jica would provide technical assistance in terms of capacity building for technical experts so that PNG may carry out the inventory data collection, preparation and reporting.
Jica representative from Tokyo, Ito Mimpei, said one of the key aspects of the project was to develop a systematic approach for the inventory.
“Previously, it used to be contracted to consultants who did the inventory and those experiences did not necessarily remain in the country or the CCDA,” he said.
“So going forward, we want to develop a system in PNG which can be done by local experts.”
