Authority to be established to implement Wash policy

A workshop for the provinces and districts has discussed and deliberated on the draft bill to establish an authority to coordinate implementation of water supply systems.
The draft bill follows approval of the National Wash Sector Policy and Strategy 2015-2030. It was moved by the Department of National Planning and Monitoring to establish the National Water Sanitation and Hygiene Authority (NWSHA).
The role of the NWSHA is to enable the Government to reach universal access by 2050 through providing leadership, oversight, coordination and regulation to the sector.
Minister for National Planning and Monitoring Richard Maru said the absence of a single body responsible for development and implementation of the national Wash policy was a major impediment to development of the sector.
“NWSHA is the way forward to taking this development challenge head on so that all Papua New Guineans can enjoy quality of life,” he said.
