TWENTY youths from the Moresby North-East electorate have been trained by the National Youth Development Authority (NYDA) on the operations of the District Youth Council.
The purpose was to equip youths with skills to represent fellow youths at government level.
NYDA carried out the weeklong training at its office in Gordon, Port Moresby.
Apart from familiarising themselves with District Youth Council operations, they also took basic courses in financial literacy and project management.
NYDA helped them form the first District Youth Council where they elected their chairman and executives.
The new youth chairman of Moresby North-East William Dikine thanked MP and Minister for Housing and Urbanisation John Kaupa for inviting a youth representative into the district development authority.
“His decision was a step in the right direction and a demonstration of faith in youths, who are the majority in population and dynamic age group who can participate actively to help develop the electorate,” Dikine said.
“The government has prioritised rural development but if youths are not well represented in decision-making bodies and denied their potential in participation, less change would be realised,” said NYDA director-general Dorcas Mileng.
Mileng stressed that youth representation should be seen at all government levels, according to the NYDA Act 2014.
