MORE THAN 90 participants shuttled their way to the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre for the badminton and High Performance Sport PNG talent identification day earlier this month.
Badminton Papua New Guinea president Kinivanagi Karo was in a jovial mood all day as the numbers kept pouring in.
“I am really, really excited,” Karo said.
“We had a lot of people turn up almost a hundred participants.
“They went through all the tests and skills testing as well.
“We realised that there is a lot of potential out there and I’m really excited that we actually uncovered so much badminton potential.
“We are looking forward to those who are going to be inducted into the scholarship and those who will join us.
“It’s good news for badminton and we’d like to thank the PNG Sports Foundation especially High Performance Sport PNG for making it happen.”
Karo said they were hoping that there would be another opportunity in the not too distant future for those who missed out on their first talent ID session so they could get as many people as possible playing the sport.
Regular badminton competitions are currently piggybacking the Pinoy Shuttlers competition at the Rita Flynn courts on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm but Karo hopes to have a separate competition during daylight hours so more people can join.
Karo said the talent uncovered during the talent identification programme plus existing athletes would give them a better idea of who would represent the country at next year’s Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa.
