CORRECTIONAL Services Acting Commissioner Steven Pokanis says Baisu jail is now getting water supply from the Mt Hagen town authority after a recent situation of untreated water being consumed by prisoners and officers in the institution.
Pokanis said there had been some mishap due to low water supply and so officers, their families and detainees will be frequenting the nearby creek for water.
“I am yet to receive a complaint on the water problem from the commanding officer, I will assist once I get his report,” he said.
He said for remandees and convicted prisoners it was a complex matter.
“There will always be insinuations and public perceptions on our people incarcerated in correctional institutions which can be both negative and positive,” Pokanis said.
“While I read and listen to all these constructive comments, the mandated functions of Correctional Services is to keep these marginalised people in, rehabilitate, reform and transform them so that they can go back to their families and the community they reside in.”
Pokanis acknowledged some hardworking officers who continued to commit themselves to their work.
“They do not give up, they continue going to work on time and finish on time.”
