THE Baiyer Cattle Ranch in the Mul-Baiyer Lumusa, Western Highlands, has the potential to supply the Upper Highlands with fresh meat, says Livestock Development Corporation (LDC) managing director Terry Koim.
Koim said the LDC was instructed by the Government in a letter (dated March 17, 2020), to reclaim, repossess and rehabilitate state land and old projects which were under the then Primary Industry Department.
He said by 2025, LDC aimed to see the country self-sufficient in meat production and he urged locals to work with company and the Government ensure the industry developed.
“Everything that we are having in terms of meat products is often imported,” he said.
“The LDC aims to put a stop on the importation of meat products such as beef into the country and produce locally so every home can afford locally produced meat.”
Koim said after aboundary rehabilitation survey was conducted earlier this year, the Baiyer cattle ranch in Portion 157 lay on 2,911 hectares of land and the LDC aimed to revive the project next year.
He said locals who had buildings and properties on portion 157 had to vacate it for the project to start.
Koim said locals and leaders needed to appreciate the benefits of the project which would help the province and region.
“The project will not only produce the Upper Highlands with fresh meat, it will bring about employment opportunities and other developments in the community, therefore, we must all work together,” he said.
