A DELEGATION from Bangladesh is in the country to study the Village Court system which is regarded as one of the best in the world.
The delegation is led by Syed Mahboob Hansan, the secretary of the local government division of the ministry of local government rural development and cooperative.
Hansan said the delegation comprised officers from the cabinet division, a lawyer, ministry of public administration, the local government division and a United Nations development programme official.
He said although the Village Court system in their country was working, it was not that effective.
Their visit should enable them to learn more about PNG’s system and make adjustments to their system to address petty offences and community disputes.
He said there were many pending courts cases in Bangladesh starting from the highest court and they wanted to deal with some of the cases at the village level.
UNDP project manager Sarder M Asaduzzaman said that they chose to come to PNG because the system had been successful where there was community participation.
