Women’s Micro Bank is delivering services right down to grassroots level, says Minister for Commerce and Industry Wera Mori.
He was speaking during the opening of the Morata branch of Women’s Micro Bank in Port Moresby on Thursday.
“Financial institutions provide service to people who have formal addresses that can be verified by documents such as school certificates,” Mori said.
“How about our mothers who don’t have formal addresses and are earning their income through informal means?”
Mori thanked Women’s Micro Bank for delivering its services down to the grassroots level and providing financial literacy training for local clients.
The initiative was done in partnership with the Urban Rural Development Foundation (URDF).
Women who generate income through the informal sector and are having difficulties saving up to start businesses are now able to easily access financial services through Micro Bank.
Those living in the Waigani-Morata area can now bank at the new branch in Morata.
The bank, which was opened by National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop, was something the women of Morata Settlement had pushed for.
The women wanted a banking service that could help them save money.
Through certain women leaders and their advocacy, they have been able to work together and were successful in bringing Micro Bank into the settlement.
Micro Bank general manager Gunanidhi Das said the women did not need to travel into the city now that there was a
Micro Bank branch in the settlement.
