A contract aimed at improving working conditions for Westpac employees was signed yesterday.
The industrial agreement is a contract between the workers’ union and Westpac Bank on behalf of Westpac’s employees.
It is put to improve different forms of the Employment Act.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Westpac and both union and Labour Department representatives at Westpac head office in Port Moresby.
“Together with the union and our staff representatives, we have produced a modern agreement that not only reflects Westpac’s core values but also promotes a fair and progressive environment for all employees,” Westpac managing director Adrian Hughes said.
Hughes said the introduction of new benefits and entitlements was a great outcome which made Westpac an even greater place to work.
“Some of the benefits of the agreement included housing allowance increase of 20 per cent, 20 days annual leave from previously 15 days, job security and more flexibility for working mums,” he said.
Industrial Registrar Helen Saleu said it was a milestone achievement.
“At least the employees have a voice now,” she said.
Saleu congratulated management of Westpac and the Union for recognising rights of workers in Westpac. Employees also expressed their delight.
“Westpac is a great place to work, and with these additional benefits, we feel truly valued as employees and are proud to be a part of this business,” said Dorothy Passingan, a Westpac employee of 39 years.
The signing of the agreement goes along with law and Government policies which supports collective bargaining , a process of discussions between employers and employees aimed at agreements to control working salaries, working conditions, benefits and other aspects of workers compensation and rights for workers.
The agreement also captures best practice at Westpac and it is globally in line with International Labour Organisation rules and other international laws that protect the interests of workers.
The agreement only applies to PNG national working in Westpac.
