Barramundis to resume preparation for T20 World Cup

THE Papua New Guinea Barramundis will resume training this week following a week off after competing in the Isuzu Twenty-20 (T20) Smash competition over the last three weeks.
Skipper Assad Vala said the competition was a good addition to their preparation for the T20 World Cup in West Indies and United States set for June.
The team will be training in Port Moresby for the next three weeks before a final squad is announced with the team to depart in the second week of May.
Vala has praised the 16 Under-19 players who competed recently in the men’s T20 Smash saying some of them gave a challenge to the Barramundis – which was a good prep run for their world cup campaign.
“It was a really good performance for the U19 throughout the tournament showing really good signs for the future of Cricket in PNG as well as for their tournament coming up,” Vala told The National.
“We’re getting back to train (this week) and start working out for the World Cup. We should leave on May 12 or 14 for the World Cup.”
The next few weeks will be crucial for the Barramundis as they fine tune their preparations.
The team will be in West Indies two weeks before the World Cup starts to get some lead up matches before their big dance. The Barramundis will play their Group C opener against West Indies on June 2 before taking on Uganda, Afghanistan and New Zealand.
“We will be going up against three full member nations in New Zealand, Afghanistan and West Indies,” said Vala.
“We have played a lot against Uganda and had some great games over the years so we are really looking forward to these fixtures.”
