CRICKET Papua New Guinea (CPNG) will host one-day international fixtures at Amini Park, Port Moresby, in September with Namibia, Scotland, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Scotland confirming their participation, according to an official.
CPNG acting chairman Michael Harrison said the national men’s team, the Barramundis, had played all its international cricket away from home since 2017 and it would be great to have some home ground advantage.
“In September, we’ll be welcoming international cricket to PNG for the first time in several years,” he said.
“Namibia, Scotland, UAE and Nepal will visit our shores and play a 50-over series all throughout the month.”
While details of the event are yet to be announced, Harrison said CPNG had four national teams playing in world class events and would improve with time.
“The Kumul Petroleum-sponsored PNG Lewas (women’s team) will head off in September to try to qualify for the Twenty-20 (T20) World Cup in Dubai where the top two countries will go through the 2023 World Cup in South Africa.
“The Barramundis will be in Darwin early next month for the revamped 365 programme, playing twenty-20 games against the Melbourne Stars, Melbourne Renegades and a Cricket Australia 11.
“This is a three-year CPNG commitment where there is a chance for our men’s team to showcase their skills and push for opportunities in the Big Bash League.”
