Basketball tournament in Lae hailed a success

AN EXECUTIVE of the National Souths Basketball League has hailed the recent basketball tournament held in Lae, Morobe as a resounding success.
Jotham Yawari said the tournament which drew teams and spectators from across the nation, showcased an impressive array of talent and sportsmanship, leaving an indelible mark on both the local community and the wider basketball landscape.
Throughout the event, there were standout performances from teams and players which captivated the audience with thrilling game-winning moments from teams such as Kikori South’s, who travelled far passing through five provinces to get to Lae.
Kikori came second after going against defending champions Usano Sura from Southern Highlands.
Yawari emphasised the significance of these displays, noting their impact on engaging and inspiring basketball enthusiasts.
“Beyond the court, the tournament served as a catalyst for community engagement, with the vibrant city of Lae fully embracing the festivities,” he said.
“There were also notable initiatives such as basketball clinics, fan zones, and community outreach programmes which had fostered unity and excitement among residents, strengthening the bond between sport and community.”
Yawari further said that the economic impact of hosting such a prestigious tournament was profound, with Lae experiencing significant boosts in tourism and support for local businesses. He said hotels, restaurants and shops benefited during the event.
“Apart from the game, the NSBL plans to further develop basketball infrastructures and programmes that are underway with a focus on nurturing local talent, fostering youth participation and establishing Lae as a hub for basketball excellence,” Yawari said.
He said as the echoes of the tournament resonated throughout the province, the enduring legacy of this event would continue to inspire growth, unity and opportunity for years to come.
