PARENTS and teachers have been urged to become role models to their children.

Western Highlands education disciplinary committee chairman Peter Pilamb said that at St Mary’s Ulka Primary School, in Nebilyer district, last Thursday during the opening of a new double-storey classroom.

Pilamb said smoking, drinking alcohol, fighting, swearing or using of abusive words in front of children were bad.

“The minds of the students are developing and they will capture what you do and say. They will then do and say the same things,” he said.

He said many students attending various educational institutions were not disciplined and quickly ended up in all sorts of problems because they were brought up wrongly by their parents and teachers.

He said many would live with these bad habits for the rest of their lives.

“Parents and teachers have a big responsibility to help the young generation become good law-abiding citizens,” he said.

Pilamb said children’s education should be a partnership project between parents, teachers and the Government.

He said the Government contributed by providing free education and paying teachers’ salaries, and parents by looking after them, paying project fees and sending them to school.

Pilamb said teachers must play their part by becoming role models, be committed in their career and providing quality education to the students.

He said when all the parties performed their roles, they would achieve a positive result in the education of the children.
