POLICE have warned people planning to come and live in New Ireland that they will face being sent back if they get involved in criminal activities.
Provincial Police Commander Supt Albert Beli said: “Once you behave disorderly or cause concern in the communities or become a public nuisance, you will be flushed out. New Irelanders are peaceful people. If you want to live in the province, behave yourself.”
Beli made the comment after the arrest of seven men from various parts of the country who allegedly attacked and robbed tourists at a resort in Kavieng last month.
It was alleged that on Jan 13, between 10pm and 11pm, nine people living in the Lissenung Island Lodge were having some drinks when criminals entered.
An expatriate female was reportedly raped.
The men allegedly used guns and knives to steal K2,000 cash and properties valued at more than K35,000. Beli said so far seven men had been charged with armed robbery and rape.
Two appeared in the Kavieng court for mention last week.
The remaining five are expected to appear in court today.
Beli said two suspects known to police were still on the run.
The ages of the nine suspects were between 17 and 27.
New Ireland has 98 police officers. Beli said he needed additional manpower.
