THE Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPNG) celebrated International Women’s Day with a mixed three-on-three tournament at Gerehu in Port Moresby on Sunday.
National basketball development officer Jordan Sere said BFPNG’s aim was to empower women through the sport.
“We wanted an equal representation on the courts for women and men, and formed three-on-three teams,” he said.
“We were happy with the turnout. It shows the continued growth and rising popularity of three-on-three basketball in PNG.
“It is a great effort from our volunteer coaches and everyone involved in this project.”
The tournament was supported by the Australian Aid and Fiba through the Mum’s A Hero programme.
According to Sere, the programme was designed to support women and children by providing a safe environment that encouraged them to learn and take a more active role in society.
He thanked coach Jane Tongia for her support of the programme.
“We hope to continue seeing her lead and promote the programme in Gerehu,” Sere said.
“The feedback we receive with this programme has been great and we are proud of the warm reception by the communities we visit.
“It motivates us to keep doing the good work to make a positive impact.”
The tournament attracted more than 100 participants.
