THE Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea’s (BFPNG) ‘Hoops For Health’ initiative continues to reach communities and schools with St Charles Lwanga Secondary School being the latest.
The initiative was introduced to the school this month to teach the basics of three-on-three and basketball rules while promoting the advantages of living a healthy lifestyle.
“We were approached by some students to run the initiative in their school,” BFPNG national development officer Jordan Sere said.
“So we drafted a proposal and their principal Joymon Mathew welcomed us with open arms.
“We were a little hesitant at first because it was a new venue and group but it all came together quickly with the way the students received us,” BFPNG chief executive Daroa said.
“The children were keen to listen to the coaches and the interest has been overwhelming.
“Even when we organised our clinic simultaneously with other sports, they chose to learn basketball.”
The clinic featured Grades 9 and 10 students across four classes.
“The support we got was tremendous. Mathew was with us throughout the clinic and his support helped us implement the initiative well,” Daroa said.
The clinic will run for four sessions at St Charles Lwanga Secondary School in Gerehu, Port Moresby.
“We are expecting even more participants in the next session and are planning to bring in more coaches to accommodate the needs of the children and produce better results,” Sere said.
