Bid to protect State items from MPs

A full inventory of all Parliament property will be made to ensure that outgoing MPs and their staff do not walk away with items that do not belong to them, Acting Clerk Kala Aufa, pictured, says.
This is because there have been past cases of outgoing MPs and their staff ransacking their offices after losing in the general election.
“This year, we’ve done an inventory for all offices,” Aufa told The National.
“We’ve got an inventory so if anything happens, we’ll hold the MPs and their staff responsible.”
Aufa said Parliament security would be stepped up to ensure that when MPs move out, what belonged to the State would remain.
“We’ll give them a certain time when they should move their stuff out,” he said.
“That will be taken care of by security and our building managers.
“We’ll make sure that these things don’t happen.”
Aufa said the inventory included furniture, computers and others.
“We hope that when they (MPs) go out, they know what’s theirs and what’s not,” he said.
Meanwhile, Aufa said a committee had been set up to plan for the new Parliament in August after the general election.
