THE most recent tabulation of participants in the Samoa Pacific Games reports that more than 5,000 athletes and team officials will be participating in Apia over the next two weeks, makes it the biggest one to date.
This was confirmed by Andrew Minogue, chief executive of the Pacific Games Council.
The Games are staging 27 sports and hosting athletes from 24 countries.
This year’s participant numbers are the highest for the Games to date.
At the 2007 Games, the last time Samoa hosted the event, 4,490 athletes and officials participated in 33 sports, six more sports than in 2019.
According to Minogue, the Samoa Games beats all previous participant records.
The previous record holder was New Caledonia in 2011, with 4,899 participants.
