BIOMETRIC voter registration is now being trialed in the Kupiano by-election in the Abau district (Central) local level government area.
The by-election was prompted by Andrew Baime’s death in February. More than 600 are expected to vote.
Acting electoral commissioner Simon Sinai said the by-election was an opportunity to continue trialing the biometric voting registration system to eradicate fraud like inflated common roll, ghost names, underage voters and violence.
This biometric registration system will capture voters’ photo and all the personal details will be loaded up to Global Position System (GPS) where voters’ location will also be registered and located,” Sinai said.
He said the first trial on biometric was done at the Laraubada by-election in Motu in November.
“We are now improving on that on this Kupiano ward by-election,” Sinai said.
“We will do another by-election in the Rarai ward in the Kairuku-Hiri in Central and in the Baupie ward in the Goroka in Eastern Highlands to improve.
“We will do more trials to get prepared.”
