Boas warns Hunters

VETERAN playmaker Ase Boas has warned fellow SP Hunters squad members that they have to work hard in the pre-season as no-one is guaranteed a spot in the final cut – not even himself.
The 2020 skipper – who turns 32 next Saturday – knows what it takes to be a Hunter, having played in every Intrust Super Cup campaign since 2015.
In their 2017 title-winning campaign, the former Rabaul Guria won the player of the year and people’s choice awards.
Boas said while earning selection into the Hunters train-on squad was an achievement, it did not guarantee places for the experienced players and rookies.
“To make the Hunters train-on squad is one thing and to make the final cut is another,” he said.
“All the spot are up for grabs.
“No-one, including the senior players like me, owns a spot.
“Everyone has to compete against each other to make the final cut for next season.
“Nothing comes for free, you need to work hard.
“The rookies have been full of energy over the past two weeks, putting their best foot forward and making the most of their opportunity.
“It’s still early days but the energy and team spirit has been positive since we assembled for the pre-season.”
Meanwhile, Boas welcomed the Hunters’ relocation to Australia for next season as it had the potential to create more opportunities for the younger players in the side.
“The talk around the camp has been positive, we don’t want to put anything negative in our minds,” he said.
“We’ll be going down as a group so there’s nothing to worry about.
“We’ll be encouraging and supporting each other.”
