THE people of Ward Eight, Wampar local level government (LLG) area in Morobe’s Huon Gulf, witnessed the opening of an aid post and water supply at Bobong village on Wednesday.
The projects were carried out by ward councilor under a bottom-up planning strategy for projects in the Huon Gulf.
The opening of the projects was phase two of the strategy.
The strategy is about inclusivity and community development driven development initiatives.
As part of the strategy, local MP and Minister for Community Development, Youth and Religion Jason Peter allocated K100,000 each to the 65 wards in the Huon Gulf to construct facilities that are absent in their specific communities.
Councillor Anthon Nawayo of Ward 18, Wampar, said he had chosen Bobong village since they badly needed a health facility and water supply for the community.
The cost for the aid post was around K34,000.
The water project cost around K400,000 funded with help from AusAid.
Victoria Daniel, a local from Bobong, said they usually spent around K3 as bus fare to travel Angau Memorial General Hospital to receive medical treatment.
“This was aside from walking from the village to the main road to find transport.
“We needed the basic services, especially medical treatment.
“This issue has now been sorted out after 63 years.
“Now that the aid post is here, the kids and pregnant women will have easy access to receive medical attention, for that we are thankful,” she said.
Peter said that water and healthcare are vital services.
“There is no need for the people to ask. It is up to us to provide the services.
“The phase one of the projects started at Mararina at Watut in Bulolo, Bobong is the second and Nasuapun is third.
“I have allocated the funding for each LLG and it is up to the councillors to roll out the projects under the bottom-up plan.
“By 2027, all services should be rolled out, not just water and healthcare, but other services as well, including infrastructure such as roads and classrooms,” Peter said.
