The body of the Papua New Guinean student who died in a Chinese prison in late January will be taken to Porgera in Enga today.
Tyson Kulara, 24, from Enga, was in his second year of an accounting course at Liaoning University of Technology in China when he was arrested and detained at a prison in Dalian.
He died in prison of a cardiac arrest on Jan 27, authorities said.
The Kulara family was told of his death on Feb 5, nine days after his death. His body was brought back to Papua New Guinea last Tuesday.
His father, Thompson Kulara, said he would take his son home today on a flight to Wapenamenda.
From there, the body will be taken by road for three hours to Porgera, where family members and friends are waiting.
“We have reached the end of our journey,” Kulara said.
“I set out with only one thing in my mind on Feb 5 when I was informed of his death and that was to bring him home.
“It’s been close to two months, and now, I will take him home to Porgera.
“As a father, my heart is broken, but I find comfort in the fact that I will take him home to pay my last respects before laying him to rest with his forefathers and brothers on our land.
“No father should ever have to bury their sons.
“It is one of the most-painful experiences of life.
“As a father, I watch him grow into a young person who loved life.
“Even when he became a young adult, I was still the loving, doting father.
“I sent him off to China to get an overseas education because I wanted the best for him. I wanted to give him opportunities and ensure he would succeed in life.
“News of his death will always be one of those heartbreaking moments in my life.”
Kulara thanked everyone who had been with him since
Feb 5 for their support, prayers, and donations in cash and kind to bring his son’s body back.
“I also thank The National newspaper for the coverage they provided,” he said.
“As I leave with my son and return home, I pray the Lord continues to bless all those who stood by me.”
