Books galore at teachers’ college

 TRAINEE teachers at the Madang Teachers’ College were equipped with library books collected and donated by  Books4PNG Kids worth more than K50,000 yesterday.

More than 1,500 books were packed in 74 boxes and presented to the college.

Heather Doonan and Ibi Patane of Books4PNGKids made the presentation.

College deputy principal Stephen Potek said education faced a major problem in the country and appreciated the support.

“We are happy because it’s free,” school registrar Lucy Niaman said.

Doonan said they had distributed children’s’ fiction and non-fiction book to more than 100 schools in Madang.

“We have been donating books to schools in other centres in PNG, including nursing and medical books for hospitals,” she said.

Patane, a lecturer at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, said their next project in six months would be to equip the Modilon Hospital library.

The library is well short of refrance books

Doonan said apart from children’s and medical books, encyclopaedias, dictionaries and atlases were packed in containers for rural schools in Papua New Guinea.

Some of the books were donated to Divine Word University and Lutheran School of Nursing on Monday.
