Boost for bee keepers

Business

DESPITE the downturn in the economy, there are some easing the burden by creating employment and market opportunities in honey production for local bee keepers.
A local company in Goroka, Eastern Highlands, Nowek Group, recently launched a venture into honey purchasing and processing.
The company will purchase raw honey from local beekeepers at K14 per kilogramme at its base at Kamaliki and will process, repackage and sell it under the brand Queens Harvest.
In a small ceremony witnessed by three generations of the Shelley family and its workers, Nowek Group of Companies director Lyn Shelley and her son, general-manager Joe Shelley, cut the ribbon to the office for its honey venture last week.
The occasion marked the release of Nowek’s processed honey products which would come in 300g and 500g bottles and would be marketed under the brand label Queens Harvest.
The company said its honey purchasing and processing venture was initially set for launch in April but had to be delayed because of the Covid-19 and the lockdown.
