THE World and Asian Boxing Councils see potential in Papua New Guinea and they want to work with local promoter Oceania Fight Promotions to expose more PNG fighters on the global stage.
This was highlighted by WBC Asia vice-president Colonel Damrong when he officiated in the WBC-ABC light heavyweight title fight between PNG champion John Korake and Thailand’s Chaloemporn Sawatsuk in Port Moresby on Sunday.
Damrong said WBC and ABC wanted to help PNG and Asian fighters reach their goals of representing their countries and families in big international bouts.
“Since ABC affiliated with WBC in 1985, the organisation has produced 30 world champions. For example, the light heavyweight world champion Sergey Kovalev, of Russia.
“I watched your local under card fights and I find that there are a lot of talented PNG fighters.
“They have the potential but they need support.
“WBC and ABC want to work with local promoter Oceania Fight Promotions to expose these fighters.
“I believe that in the future, WBC and ABC can help Oceania Fight Promotions unearth PNG’s first world champion.”
Prime Minister James Marape, who attended the event, praised WBC for taking a keen interest in PNG boxers.
“I thank WBC for supporting our local promoter Oceania Fight Promotions in marketing our fighters,” he said.
“The Government is committed to support boxing in the country and we will work with promoters, WBC and ABC.”
