THE Papua New Guinea Amateur Boxing Union has joined the Oceania boxing fraternity in mourning the passing of the Oceania Amateur Boxing Association secretary Arthur Tunstall over the weekend.

PNGBU president John Avira and secretary Dr Gideon Kendino conveyed their sincere condolences to Boxing Australia on the passing of the boxing administrator.

Avira said the late Tunstall was a great leader and a no-nonsense guy.

The PNG boxing chief said Tunstall was in charge of Oceania Boxing during former president Bernard Fong’s regime.

Kendino, who assumed the secretary’s role only this year, described Tunstall’s passing as sad news for Oceania boxing.

Older members of the boxing fraternity in PNG and the Oceania have fond memories of interactions with him as a knowledgeable and an approachable boxing administrator.

Tunstall was involved in amateur boxing for 70 years and held senior positions for 60 years.

He was the secretary and treasurer of the Amateur Boxing Union of Australia (now Boxing Australia) for 46 years — 1953-1999 — and was Australia’s representative to AIBA for decades.
