The Lae Committal Court on Monday refused bail for a 22-year-old man and ordered his remand in custody at Buimo prison for allegedly killing a one-year-six month-old boy last Dec 13.
The court was told that the incident happened at Aleyabam village in Salamaua, Huon Gulf, Morobe, between 11am and noon.
Police told the court that the defendant, Leo Sebong from Aleyabam village, had allegedly decided to kill the boy long before he committed the offence. Senior Magistrate Pious Tapil told Sebong the court will give police three months to complete their investigations.
“The court will not allow you bail and you will be remanded in custody at Buimo Prison until your next appearance in court on April 15,” Magistrate Tapil told Sebong.
Police alleged that Sebong killed the boy by hitting his head with a stone nine times before wrapping his body with a market bag and dumping it in the Yamap River.
The incident was revealed to villager leaders after Sebong was held in custody at the village on Dec 14.
The court heard that the boy was taken Sebong to the river for a bath when the incident happened.
