Brian Bell starts using paper bags

Business

THE Brian Bell Group has started using paper bags and is encouraging its customers to bring bilums or any other recycled bags when they go shopping to help the environment.
Chief executive officer Cameron Mackellar, while making the announcement yesterday to celebrate World Environment Day, said they anticipated that in 10 years the use of paper bags would take out of the environment about 10 million single-use plastic bags. He said this initiative was a result of having conversation with the Government over the last 12 months on legislating against single-use plastic bags.
“The group has looked reflectively on the things we do as a company and given that we hand out million plastic bags a year throughout all our businesses,” he said.
“We thought we could do better than that in ensuring the future of the environment of Papua New Guinea.
“We came up with the idea of replacing single-use plastic bags with new paper bags.
“So over the course of the next 10 years, we estimate that we will take out of the environment some 10 million single-use plastic bags.
“This will also be a chance for us as a business to make sure that we are meeting some of our environment conservation obligations.”
