Bridge collapses, 6,000-plus people cut off from services

MORE than 6,000 people from five council wards in Tambul-Nebilyer, Western Highlands, have been cut off from services after the collapse of a bridge due to heavy rainfall.
Peter Kinjap, a local from the area, said continuous rains had caused the Walter Bridge to collapse last week.
He said an aid post, two schools (elementary and primary) and the staff and families were among those affected.
The aid post also has limited supplies of medicines and equipment which it gets from Mt Hagen.
Kinjap said the downed bridged had isolated the people in the community but the most pressing issue was lack of supplies, including medicine getting through.
He said with the start of school on May 4, it was uncertain whether the schools would be able to open.
He said the local community had appealed to the provincial authorities to give direction on what could be done to reconnect them to the rest of the province.

  • We have one of the lazy provincial government who major minor services areas, their focused in areas where doesn’t have ripple effective, which are short term and will receive a lot of praises from the village illiterate and those who always think of filling their own pockets. Setting low standard schools everywhere like chicken houses, complete lack in leadership. This bridge is a long over due area that needs replacement and nothing has been done until now the whole population is disadvantaged with such unfortunate. WHP Government needs to wake up from its long slumber.
