Jail to focus on rehabilitation
BAISU jail in Western Highlands will focus on religion and rehabilitation programmes to change the prisoners’ mindsets, jail commander Supt Ranson Tiki says. Supt Tiki, who took over the reins from Chief Insp Donald Apeti recently, said the focus was to get back to the basics and this was to start focusing on programmes like religion.

POLITICIANS should not interfere with the procurement and distribution of medicines and pharmaceutical supplies, says Ijivitari MP Richard Masere. He said when politicians, bureaucrats and secretaries started interfering with the process, that’s when problems began.

NORTHERN Governor Gary Juffa says that the weak systems in the Health Department had allowed certain individuals to exploit the system. “The systems need to be reviewed,” he said.

Students receive help
FACULTY of Education students attending the Wewak Divine Word University St Benedict’s Campus received K300,000 from the East Sepik government. Wewak education chairman Jackson Kapmawal presented the cheque to campus vice-president Fr Lawrence Arockiaraj on Sept 8 as a students’ support scheme to help their field teaching practice.

THERE is an imbalance between population growth and services available, says Evangelical Lutheran church of PNG head bishop Rev Dr Jack Urame. “The services provided by the Government and the churches like the schools, hospitals, health centres and other infrastructures cannot sufficiently meet the needs of the growing population,” he said.

Three new boats received
PEOPLE in the Labuta local level government area of Nawaeb in Morobe received three banana boats and engines worth more than K100,000 from the district’s development authority (DDA) recently. DDA chairman and Nawaeb MP Kennedy Wenge said the boats would be used to encourage growth of small and medium enterprises and health.

Workshop on new normal
THE PNG Council of Churches (PNGCC) held a church leaders’ Covid-19 sensitisation workshop at Vunapope in East New Britain last week. PNGCC general secretary Rev Roger Joseph said the workshop was to ensure church leaders understood the Government’s Niupla Pasin (the new normal)­­­­­ procedures.

Disaster officers get training
THE Australia Pacific Training Coalition recently delivered the second cohort of the international skills training, an internationally qualified programme to improve training and assessment of adult learners in technical vocational education training. The 18 participants included employees of the Western government’s disaster office, PNG Fire Service, and national disaster officers.
