BRITISH High Commissioner Keith Scott says he will be rallying behind Team Papua New Guinea in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in July.
His remarks came after the Queen’s baton relay was hosted in East Sepik, showcasing their diverse culture, and sports and sustainable activities.
“I will definitely be supporting PNG in the Birmingham Games and particularly promoting all aspect of the country,” Scott said.
“It was the first time East Sepik has represented PNG in the baton relay and I’ve witnessed that province do PNG proud.
“The diversity of PNG was shown in East Sepik and it was the best of what PNG could offer.
“Seeing para-athletes taking part in the relay as well as lots of women and children was a fantastic message to send.
“The Birmingham Games will be the first Commonwealth Games where the para-games are fully integrated — where disabled and able-bodied athletes will compete together.
“I think that’s a fantastic message to send throughout the Commonwealth that it doesn’t matter who you are, what you are.
“Whether you’re a woman or a man, disabled, minorities, you have a role to play in society and you should play it.
“I’d like to wish PNG well in the Commonwealth Games.
Meanwhile, Team PNG chef de mission Michael Henao said PNG was ranked 26 on the all-time Commonwealth Games medal tally with an achievement of 14 medals in total.
“We’ve earned five gold, seven silver and two bronze which might not seem much to some.
“But for us, it is a symbol of our unity.”
