Southern Nines defending champions Aroma Coast Brothers got off to a good start with a 34-6 victory over the Kouderika Vipers at Bava Park yesterday.
The Vipers — from the Hiri local-level government area — were unable to hold out a rampant Brothers, who next face Kelekoupa in pool I today.
Fellow Aroma Coast side and tournament rookies Waira Vanua beat Ril Roadsiders 16-8 in pool J.
It was a step up from the local league along the coast but a young Waira Vanua outfit took it in their stride and frustrated the Roadsiders throughout the 18-minute showdown.
Waira Vanua established a commanding 12-4 lead at halftime and went on to notch their first victory of the tournament.
Winger Morea Timo scored a hat-trick of tries and captain Amsy Vagi bagged one, with Navu Nope converting two goals from three attempts.
Ril Roadsiders scored through Maena Rogea and veteran Davis Mea.
Meanwhile, North Dingos Green humiliated Boera Sailors 32-0 to sound out an early warning to other teams that they were determined to make the playoffs later this week.
