UNITED Brothers escaped a late fight back by Airways Bears to win 10-9 in a nailbiting finish in the Port Moresby men’s softball competition yesterday.
Engineered by home run specialist Alex Bunbun, Bears tried desperately but could not capitalise on the mistakes by the opponents going down by a point in the final innings.
Bunbun’s efforts were denied when his team mates failed to polish up on their fielding at the top of Brothers fifth innings that caused the Bears to give away an easy home run to Brothers batter, Tonny Willie, who cruised home safely to register the game breaker at the top of Bears’ fifth innings.
It was Brothers team effort that saw them stop their fired-up opponents, who rallied at the bottom of 5th inning.
Brothers big hitters Glen Niggins, Dick Bart Jr, Nelson Kiap and Xavier Nox did the early damage in the innings for Brothers belting Bears ace pitcher Joe Achulas Jr’s deliveries out of the field for a comfortable lead in the early innings.
The momentum changed at the end of fourth inning when Bunbun’s magic strike brought home his three teammates to level the scores and inspire the Bears.
In other matches, Samurai defeated Mantarays 7-4, Gazelle dumped Defence 12-6 while the reigning premiers PNG Power continued their winning run, thrashing Dolphins 19-2.
