THE KAGUA Rugby League completed its 2020 season with SBB Brothers crowned as winners after they defeated Alams Tigers in the premier division grand final over the weekend.
In the B grade, Kimopolo Hawks defeated Brothers and Eastern Stars edged Western Stars 4-0 to win their respective finals.
League president Benny Noel told The National yesterday that K5,000 was shared among the winners and runners-up in all divisions while another K5,000 was for refreshments.
“A big thanks to BK Constructions for providing the prizes,” he said.
“It was a tough year for the league but we managed to complete the season.
“We saw some skilful and entertaining rugby league despite the short season which was played in just three months (October, November and December).
“It will only get better if we can secure more support from business houses and our local politicians.”
Noel said the league had been affiliated under Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) since last year.
He said PNGRFL high performance boss Michael Marum and Highlands Confederate director Joe Tokam had visited the area and ran clinics earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Noel said his league had also named a 19-man squad for the Mendi League Nines tournament which would be held next month.
“The squad will be trimmed down to 17 man before we head to Mendi,” he said.
“We have secured Digicel Cup player Noris Philemon who plays with Mendi Muruks.
“It will be a good opportunity for us to market our players to the Muruks.”
