BUSINESS houses, workers and people in Porgera can now access banking services after the Bank South Pacific Financial Group Limited (BSP) re-opened its Pogera Branch on Monday.
The bank had been closed in the past 12 months because of security issues.
“Porgera and other resource investments are important economic activities and BSP is pleased to return banking services to the mining town,” BSP Group retail general manager Daniel Faunt said.
Faunt said the reopening of the Porgera gold mine would be a catalyst for continued economic growth following its closure almost two years ago.
The Porgera branch service will include two Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), 40 Eftpos merchants and one agent.
“Banking is an essential service, particularly in remote communities,” Faunt said.
“As the only bank operating in Porgera, we call upon the community leaders to support the safety and wellbeing of our staff and protect our facilities to ensure it remains accessible to the community.”
When the banking services were withdrawn in April 2023, customers had to travel to Wabag to access commercial banking services.
In Enga, BSP provides services via eight ATMs, 224 Eftpos facilities and five agents.
They also have the Wabag and Progera branches. BSP is a leading retail and corporate bank with more than 120 branches around the Pacific.
