Buai chewers need to be accountable

THE issue of betel nut (buai) ban in Port Moresby has become a controversial subject for the last couple of years.

It is sad that people continue to ignore this ban because of money.

I support the plans to charge spot fines but how effective will this be?

It is prone to be abused by people authorized to collect fines to make their own ‘side’ money.

Maybe the authorities could allow people to trade from their own homes but not in public places.

This is what happened in Lae so you can see that the town areas are clean from betel nut stains.

Both the sellers and the chewers are responsible for the rubbish created so those that are caught selling and chewing in public places should be caught and charged.

Many lives have been unnecessarily lost because of the green nut.

So something more practical should be put in place.

Allow sales at their home fronts only; No public sales of buai.

It is also high time chewers are held accountable for all the rubbish they make in the city.
