THREE prisoners were shot dead and two were recaptured after they attempted to escape from Buimo jail in Lae on Sunday morning, says Correctional Services commissioner Stephen Pokanis.
He said the five men were trying to escape during visiting hours.
“They were trying to escape when three were shot dead and the other two recaptured and sent back to the cell,” Pokanis said.
He said prisoners should know that for them trying to escape from lawful custody, was putting their lives at greater risk.
“I want prisoners to work with correctional officers to become better citizens after they finish their sentences and go to their families,” Pokanis said.
Meanwhile, Northern assistant commissioner of police Peter Guinness said when attempting to escape from lawful custody, the consequences that follow may be greater.
“I am appealing to the prisoners who are now in the cells that there is no reason for you to escape this lawful custody,” he said.
“You were convicted on the offences that you have committed so stay and serve your term before joining your family,” Guinness added.
He said escaping from custody, would not do any good to the community or to themselves.
Guinness said when prisoners escaped and were on the run, they were putting their lives at greater risks, so it was for their own good and that of their family members to stay in prison until their sentences expired.
