Bullion bill, a recipe for disaster

Letters

The Government has created the Gold Bullion Bill under the guise of “Take Back PNG”.
Whether it will actually take back Papua New Guinea is a question only time will tell.
The truth on what will be achieved remains unknown.
However, the peculiar features of the bill must be noted and debated in the public domain.
The bill provides full immunity to the gold entities and their employees from any wrong-doing; the employees of the gold entities are not bound by PNG’s international borders and can freely move in and out of the country at will and without going through customs and immigration formalities; and, once the gold entities are established and operational, the entities and their employees are not bound by any PNG laws.
The bill intended to fully support activities in PNG by the gold entities and their employees, a gold mafia, under the guise of trading in bullion and coins. The bill will create chaos and carnage in PNG if it is passed by Parliament and becomes law.
Parliament must act now and grill the prime minister and the Government on why such a bill is being pushed through, without following a process of thorough and critical public debate on it.
