YOUTHS in rural villages and urban settlements must voluntarily give up illicit drug and homebrew abuse to live better lives in society, National Narcotics Bureau director-general John Mapusa says.

Mapusa was commending the youths in Kwaian, Kufar and Ambukon villages in West Yangoru, East Sepik, for surrendering marijuana plants and homebrew equipment to their local MP Richard Maru.

“I thank the village leaders, youth groups, police and the local MP for assisting the bureau’s work in eliminating drug and alcohol abuse in the West Yangoru area.

“Marijuana, steam and other illicit substances have no place in our society and I appeal to other youths and community leaders to follow this example.”

He said it was not hard to say no to illicit marijuana cultivation, trafficking and consumption.

“Quit abusing steam and other homebrew products.

“I urge community leaders and youths in all provinces to take the lead so that, together, we will eliminate the social menace and make our country drug-free,” Mapusa said.

He said the bureau was willing to partner with village leaders, youth groups, church organisations, schools and police in this fight.
