Bus stop wardens vital for safety

An association in Port Moresby has plans to create employment incentives for youths to be bus stop wardens.
The Public Motor Vehicle Association of NCD Inc. is planning on employing youths from each suburb in the city to be wardens.
PMV Association Administration and Operations Manager, Simon Kunamen said under the association’s plan to promote a safe city, safe public transport they will be employing youths to be wardens with the aim of containing petty crimes that happen at bus stops.
“These bus stop wardens will help to maintain peace and good order at bus stops, they will assist visitors, mothers, children and the elderly.”
“Having wardens will really help in minimising petty crimes happening at a high rate at major city bus stops.”
“They would be in uniforms and issued an identifying card so they would be easily recognised by name,” he said.
He said the association would also train drivers to maintain a professional dressing codes and bus crews to have good customer service and security procedures.
He said this initiative is part of the plans to develop the Public Transport System in NCD and eventually throughout Papua New Guinea and the association is working in conjunction with stakeholders which included the Road Traffic Authority, Police Traffic, National Capital District Commission (NCDC), Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) and UN Women PNG office.
He said the association also has plans to develop;

  • Industry participants skills and knowledge development (Safe city, Safe Public Transport Programme)
  • Public Transport Management Company a Subsidiary entity of PMVA
  • Empower women public transport entrepreneurs.
