NORTHERN Motel Butterflies impressed at the MRDC 9s Cup in Port Moresby Rugby League over the weekend.
Butterflies, comprising mostly Under-20 players, had the backing of major sponsor and patron Peter Oresi and they did not let him or their fans down making the cup semifinal and losing to eventual champions Aroma Coast Siporo Magpies.
The Butterflies beat Royals 10-0 to claim the plate and K3000.
Patron Oresi said the side did well to make the cup semifinals and commended the club’s juniors for competing hard against the Magpies and then against Royals.
He said the performance boded well for the club heading into the Port Moresby rugby reague season.
“The talent we have in our U20s is good. They are enthusiastic and competitive so that’s a good sign,” Oresi said.
“They’re young but with good training and guidance they will make up our senior squad and go on from there.”
The Butterflies women lost to Paga Panthers 12-8 in extra time in their cup final after the scores were 8-8 at the end of the final.
