THE winner of the Kairiku-Hiri by-election is expected to be declared by the end of this week, an election official says.
Electoral officers went through quality check for the ballot papers for the 22 candidates yesterday.
The results were unchanged.
National Alliance Party candidate Peter Namea Isoaimo maintained his lead with 12,849 votes and People’s National Party candidate Paru Ahi remained in second place with 12,835, a difference of 14 votes.
The elimination process was expected to begin last night.
The first candidate to be eliminated would be the one with the lowest number votes as given on count 40.
His ballot papers would be distributed among the other candidates.
The second candidate to be eliminated would be the one who had lowest votes after the ballot papers for the first eliminated candidate had been distributed.
The elimination process would continue until a candidate received the absolute majority.
