IT is expected that the Kumul Submarine Cable Network (KSCN 2) – the Port Moresby to Madang express link – will be fully restored by Saturday, according to PNG DataCo Ltd.
Chief executive Paul Komboi said the company hoped to restore both cables (KSCN 1 and KSCN 2) before end of the month.
“The PPC-1 (Pipe Pacific Cable-1) trunk cable connecting Sydney to Guam was fixed last Monday (Oct 31),” Komboi said.
“Repair vessels CS Reliance commenced cable retrieval and repair work on the spur submarine cable link into Madang cable landing station on Nov 1, 2022,” he said.
“The cable has been detected but is buried under the seabed.
“Cable verification tests are being performed before its retrieval up to the vessel for splicing work to be done.
“Current indication is that the PPC-1 cable into Madang should be fixed before Thursday (Nov 10).”
Komboi added that the CS Teneo, the repair vessel for KSCN System 1& 2, retrieved a few sections of the system 2 express cable link from the sea floor.
“The vessel will perform splicing work after further testing and inspection of the remainder of the cable length into Madang,” Komboi said.
“It is expected that KSCN system 2 (Port Moresby – Madang express link) will be fully restored by Nov 12.
“CS Teneo will proceed to repair KSCN system 1 (Madang – New Guinea Islands region) after restoring the KSCN system 2 link.
“We apologise for the current outage and the degraded user experience period.
“However, we remain committed to fully restore both cable systems before end of the month.”
The 7.6 magnitude earthquake in September broke the cable on PPC-1 (Pipe Pacific Cable-1) and KSCN Systems 1 and 2.
