Call to axe US-PNG defence agreement

Letters

The US-PNG Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) was signed by despite protests.
We must continue the fight to expose and depose these corrupted politicians in the PNG Government, and stop them from selling Papua New Guinea sovereignty to the US through the DCA.
Although Marape said PNG would not be used as a base for war to be launched, could he and his government stop the US turning PNG into their military base and battlefield when the day comes?
We highly doubt that.
Like the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the US and Japan, despite the massive size achieved by the anti-treaty movement, the protests ultimately failed to stop the treaty.
Now the US military bases cover about one-fifth of Okinawa and house around 75 per cent of the US forces in Japan.
One contentious issue to many Okinawans is the noise and environmental pollution created by the US forces in Japan, which was found to cause heart problems, disrupt sleep patterns, and damage cognitive skills in children.
We are now calling on the Government to stop Aukus getting into PNG Lombrum Naval base and prevent PNG from nuclear pollution and radiation.
