CHUAVE MP Wera Mori wants parliament to pass a law banning other religions to maintain the country’s stand as a Christian nation.
Mori made the call in parliament yesterday after the Minister for Religion, Youth and Community Development, Loujoya Toni, gave her ministerial statement.
“PNG is a Christian country.
“Like other countries, we must be strict and put into our Constitution that we worship the God of Israel,” Mori said.
He made the comments after Gumine MP Dawa Lukas Dekena told parliament he and his support group were attacked on a recent trip to his electorate by believers of another religious group.
Dekena said they were shot at and three of their vehicles were burnt in the attack.
“The instigator was caught but, somehow, got out of jail and, now, there is great possibility of tribal warfare in the area,” he said.
“Churches are good, but monitor the believers.”
Kundiawa MP Tobias Kulang said Christianity should be used as a founding principle and a guide in observing leadership.
“There are challenges faced with defining what is right and wrong.
“We struggle to define and, sometimes, perceive what is wrong to be right,” he said.
“We are living in challenging times.
“Where we need to take into account the fundamental issue of integrity and moral uprightness, we need to institutionalise our Christian religion,” Kulang said.
