HAGEN MP William Duma is calling on foreign-owned and operated businesses in Mt Hagen not to provide merchandise to street vendors because of the amount of rubbish created by their activities.
Duma said businesses had a responsibility to help keep the city clean.
He said street vendors and their customers created a lot of rubbish and this needed to be controlled.
He said businesses, especially retailers, needed to play their part by not supplying vendors.
Duma said many youths were seen engaging in this business and that was not right because it was destroying the city’s image.
“We have to make it become our business to look after this place as it is our provincial capital and PNG’s third city,” he said.
Duma said the public had been critical of how the city was managed but he reminded them that there was a clear structure on who was responsible for the city’s maintenance and upkeep.
He said there was a difference between the city authority and district authority.
Duma, who is Minister for Commerce and Industry, raised the concern after noting the state of Mt Hagen.
He called on city residents to take steps to keep the city clean by starting in their streets, communities and disposing of rubbish responsibly.
He said keeping Mt Hagen clean would require a team effort between the public and the city authority.
Duma called on the people doing street sales and illegal activities to change their ways.

  • When you walk around and see, the street vendors are buying items from the shops in whole sale price and the street vendors are sailing in low price to make up their spendings and make some profits. Street vendors and general public need to understand on how to control their rubbish. Their must be some control magnesium in the city by the city authorities.

  • Every city has a city council or city rangers or city authority – review job roles and each must perform beyond average mark in order for a clean city to live in. If they are too fat or lazy than sack them from their employment and recruit new ones by merit.
