Call to open new market

THE Goroka Chamber of Commerce and Industry wants the new Goroka market to open soon for people to do marketing.
Chamber president Chris Anders said the temporary market at Peace Park had been there for two years and it was time to free up the land and move it back to the original location.
The market starts opposite the bowling club, at the airport fence and goes all the way down to where it meets the Highlands Highway .
“We have a brand new market that was built where the old one was but that has not been opened,” he said.
“The new market should be opened soon a as it is fenced.
“Now that we have the Covid-19 in the country, this is one way that we can control social distancing,” Anders said.
“Only allowing a certain number of people to enter the market at any one time, as people purchase their goods and leave a similar number of people can enter.”

  • I agree, but probably Covid-19 must have delayed the official opening.

Market needs to be managed in a proper and accountable way as it will generate significant income and at the same time sustain its own operations. We can adopt the model from Kokopo market and Lae main market which has improved significantly.

  • As a resident of Goroka, I hope the market will cater for the growing number of sellers. Hence, I will not be shocked to see or hear people fighting for space in the new market. And the big question is ‘WHO IS GOING TO MANAGE THE NEW MARKET FACILITY????????’
