Cancelled flights causing long queues

THE long queues at the Jackson Airport in Port Moresby is because of cancelled flights which the National Airports Corporation (NAC) is addressing, says managing director and chief executive officer Rex Kiponge.
“When you look at queuing, Port Moresby becomes the nerve centre that connects the 21 airports,” he said.
“When you are coming back, it is not an issue.
“So during the Christmas period, a lot of people travel.
“In the future, this calls for us to look at the facilities.
“We are planning to expand the terminals.
“Because of the Coronavirus (Covid-19), a lot of the international flights are cancelled.
“So people are now travelling within the country.
“The queuing is to do with the cancelled flights.
“People come as early as 3am to get a boarding pass.
“Then we have the scheduled flights as well.
“That is why people are crowded inside.”
Kiponge said NAC would be commissioning a back-of-the-house baggage screening this week.
“We are also putting the back-of-house screening as well,” he said.
“So end of this week, we will commission the back-of-house-screening.
“The screen you see in front of the entry will be removed, so all the luggage and baggage will be checked from the back-of-house-screening.
“So you just come in, do you screening and then you go through your secondary screening.
“Secondary screening is a requirement.
“It will remain, but for the entry, it will be a thing of the past, we have got a new conveyer belt.”
