The root cause of law and order problems in Lae city has been overlooked, resulting in an increase in serious crimes, an LLG elections candidate said.

Alfred Kiandu, a Morobean youth leader who is contesting the Lae mayor’s seat held by James Khay, said this during his nomination at the Lae district office on Tuesday.

He said half of Lae’s population was made up of youths but no opportunities had been provided for them.

“The youths in Lae have paid my nomination and wanted me to contest on their behalf,” he said.

“They told me they want to stop crime and change their ways but need strong support from the authorities.

“So far youths in Lae have not been receiving that support. I am thinking of changing that.”

Kiandu said if he became mayor, the funds allocated to the Lae urban LLG would be used to create jobs and projects for youths to be occupied so that they did not think about crime.

Lae, the industrial hub of the country, has one of the highest crime rates in the country.

Kiandu said he believed law and order issues held the key to development in the country and if addressed properly could change the country for better.  More than 100 young men converged at the Lae district office to show their support for Kiandu.
